'Earth' - New Work by Darren Burge and l.h.sven johnson
These artists use both the landscape and object making as points of departure within their work. Darren starts with observing and recording the landscape and slowly obliterates it, working the image until what the viewer is looking at seems to oscillate between illusory landscape space and surface abstraction.
l.h.sven shreds plywood and then slowly builds up an object that liberally borrows from the historical language of painting and yet it is still unabashedly an object. These objects almost seem to struggle to be images. In the end, the viewer is left to sort out for themselves just what it is s/he is looking at.
